Solution Focused Brief Therapy

Your first sessions will involve an initial assessment gathering information to help me learn more about you, your current support, and your experiences. This will also include questions that screen for self-harm and risk of suicide to ensure that we can create a safety plan together if required. Additionally, you use my booking system here to book and pay for all sessions in advance. Alternatively, I offer block booking discounts in my website shop here.

I don’t want to unpack the past or go too deep in my therapy…

If that’s the case, then Solution Focused Brief Therapy may be the most suited to you and your needs. Brief therapy is often used as a term for therapy delivered in under 24 sessions.

What is Solution Focused Brief Therapy?

A therapy that focuses on your future instead of unpicking your problem and venturing deep into past events or emotions. Rather than exploring why something has happened, we look at how things can change in a way that demonstrates that you are coping better. The therapist asks lots of questions using your language, and often, clients feel like they have experienced a “real workout” after a session.

Research into Solution Focused Brief Therapy

You can review a huge collection of research on solution focused brief therapy spanning many years, including the very latest research here.

What can solution focused therapy be used for?

A variety of psychological challenges, such as anxiety and depression to help improve quality of life and coping mechanisms.

What happens during the first session?

First, we will review our therapeutic contract. This is sent to you automatically when you book your first session so you can read through it before we meet. We will also go through some questions that help us both to understand a little more about what challenges you are experiencing, including discussing self-harm and previous support.

We will establish in great detail what specific goals you have for our working together. Don’t worry if you do not know the answer right now. This is something we can work on together. We explore your strengths and consider ideas for the future. Sometimes, this takes us more than one session to complete. Together, we will decide if it would be useful to talk about how we humans can get caught up in the loop of unwanted behaviour patterns.

What happens during subsequent solution focused brief therapy sessions?

Each session has a loose structure designed to encourage you to notice improvements, identify your strengths, and be curious about ideas you may have in mind that might help you to know that you are making further improvements.

On average, how many sessions do I need for solution focused therapy?

16 – 24 dependent on the complexity of challenges.

How frequently will I need to attend therapy?

Ideally, sessions will be weekly at first, moving to fortnightly as you gain confidence. As time progresses, we will discuss increasing the gaps between each session. Some people choose to have a regular top-up session every few months after they achieve their initial goals.

How can I book an appointment?
